Aaah the life of the Gachette is indeed fabulous! Free gifts, private shopping session, canapés and champagne – while the rest of the world is on lunch break at the office!
Mastercard Style Week is currently running at the Sandton Fountain court and we were the amongst the lucky few that were invited to a private style trend briefing by Elle’s Jackie Burger and Chris Viljoen.
This year’s key fashion trend is The New Basics – the traditional staples in a raw and functional form. For summer we are seeing the return of basic, beautiful resort wear whilst winter will be inspired by utilitarian sobriety. Minimalism is key.
Best items for this look: Basic (beautiful but practical) handbag, the white shirt and nautical stripes.
Once you’ve sorted out your basic wardrobe feel free mix in more short lived trends:
Prints: A classic print is always the easiest to carry off (think a really great English floral or a subtle tribal print) and for those feeling daring mix and match completely contrasting patterns!
Skinny gets really skinny: Carrot shaped trousers make way for the cigarette leg. Guess we’re back on the block of cheese diet then!
Clogs: We’re not too sure if we’re getting on board this trend train, but if you can pull them off power to you!
Green: From Limes to Emerald, green will be a key colour for your late summer leading into wardrobe.
Underwear as Outwear: Now we’ve seen this trend brewing for ages but it is really taking on a beautiful direction. Beautifully fitted lacey shifts and camis mean you can rock sexy without looking slutty.
Block it baby: It’s all about colour blocking! Love this trend for South African summer! As a culture we’ve always put an emphasis on colour and this is one trend we can make our own.
Dior: Summer pendulums from super slim masculine silhouettes to feminine Dior inspired forms. Hello party dress! It’s time to play dress up!
The most important concept brought up was that we are no longer ruled by our clothes. YOU WEAR THE DRESS! Don’t let trends define you, but make them your own! Fashion is really emphasising the individual right now so take this opportunity to explore you!
