I find myself questioning if fashion photography is reaching a point of obsoletion. With fashion houses producing fashion films to compliment every season’s collection and more and more publications going online, is there really a point in creating these elaborate shoots? As Gareth Pugh explained in a recent interview, Ruth Hogben (his director of choice) captures exactly what goes on in the designer’s mind and links each film to his creative process.
I know there is nothing like the magic of opening a magazine. The gloss of the pages, the smell of the paper, the place where all fashion dreams began. One cannot argue the online phenomena and we have see dozens of magazines killed off in its wake. If ultimately it becomes cheaper to move completely online and we find a cost effect way to produce films that capture the entire spirit of a collection it seems unlikely that the printed medium can survive.
